Do You Cheer Too Much at Your CrossFit Gym?
Around the CrossFit world, you hear some version of this phrase fairly often:  "...where the loudest cheers are for the last to finish." I think this is a great sentiment, but sometimes I wonder if this mindset can be a little off the mark when it comes to encouraging new and struggling athletes. Here's an example... Athlete A finishes "Murph" in 35:13, takes a few moments to catch his breath, and then proceeds to start encouraging other athletes.  One by one they finish the workout...40:15, "Nice work!"...41:11, "Awesome!"...42:38, "Way... Four Ways To Skip WODs Without Anyone Noticing
Sometimes you’ve been going so hard at the box that your body is begging for a de-load day…or week.  It’s not antithetical to your bigger picture fitness goals to take a rest day. But let’s face it: if you weren’t just a little type A, you wouldn’t be regularly throwing down CrossFit WODs.  Here are four ways to skip the WODs that maintain your well-cultivated image as a beast (while slowing your roll all the same). Coach Me If You Can.  Dress up like your favorite CrossFit coach in your... Read more...
What Harley Davidson Has To Do With CrossFit...
What does Harley Davidson have to do with CrossFit? Well, there is no obvious connection, but I re-discovered this picture today, and it was really encouraging for me... I love this picture of the first Harley Davidson "factory,"  because it reminds me that mixing patience with hard work, and passion can grow into something amazing. Sometimes we want things to happen immediately.  We want a PR every time we touch a barbell.  We want a faster Fran time every time we hear 3-2-1 GO.  We want to be able to... Read more...
How Will CrossFit Make You Look?
Here's a fun exercise.  Start typing things like "Will CrossFit make you" into google, and see what people are searching... A quick glance down the list, and you'll see that most of the questions have to do with body image. (aside from the throwing up one which is pretty hilarious). If you're wondering how CrossFit will make you look, here's the truth...CrossFit will make your body look the way it is SUPPOSED to look. Many times your body will drop excess body fat to make it easier to jump on... Read more...
5 Reasons For CrossFitters To Celebrate Cinco de Mayo!
Why should CrossFitters celebrate Cinco de Mayo?  Well…Lots of reasons, but here are 5...1.  It celebrates the underdog.Cinco de Mayo celebrates a significant victory over the French by Mexico at The Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862.  At the time, the French were considered the world’s premier army, and 6,000 of them got their keysters kicked by 2,000 poorly armed Mexicans.  The French military hadn’t suffered a loss like that in over 50 years.  In CrossFit, we celebrate those who overcome seemingly insurmountable odds every day, so heck yes!…Mexico,... How To Start CrossFit...
  1.  Have friends who love/hate you enough to talk to you about CrossFit until you want to throw up.   2.  Agree to go to the box to try it out; be surprised how quickly you actually do want to throw up.   3.  After you've been going for a while, use your newfound fitness to do the workouts heavier and faster, so you'll still want to throw up.   4.  Continue to work on and develop new skills (running start not recommended for muscle-ups).   5.  Talk to... Lightning, Glaciers, and CrossFit...
As I was 3 rounds into getting my butt kicked at my local CrossFit box yesterday, I thought to myself...Wow!....This is Awesome! Here's why... In our small Colorado town, I was the first annoyingly passionate CrossFitter who talked about nothing else to anyone who would listen, and that passion led me to start a gym. So now, it’s awesome to see so many people in our town who have completely transformed themselves into fire-breathing WOD-smashing machines who consistently destroy me in workouts. However, when you see how big our gym... Read more...
5 Quotes For a Healthy Outlook on CrossFit...
Remember when you first started CrossFit?  Every time you picked up a barbell you got stronger.  Every time you did a benchmark WOD you got faster, and as the months went on, you might have even started "winning" the workout occasionally. This is awesome.  And it's SOOOOO much fun. Unfortunately, it can lead us into something that is NOT fun.  It can lead us into a place where we're only happy with a P.R....Only satisfied with a win...Only content with more weight on the bar...etc. Here is the cold,... Please Don't Go to the Gym Today...
So, normally we're pretty encouraging around here, but today, I'm politely asking you to consider staying home. You see, for a long time, I've been cherry picking WODs, dodging my least favorite movements, and skipping out on skill-work. Psshhh, I'd say.  That's stupid!  That's a ridiculous workout!... I don't have time to go today...I don't need to work on that skill...etc. Unfortunately, after skipping all of that "stupid" programming, I've noticed that everyone else started getting better, while I either stayed the same, or lost fitness in key areas. However,... Read more...
Functional Fitness For the Real World
Let's work together to find ways to make CrossFit even more functional.  Maybe someday we'll see some sort of functional fitness exercises with a fast food component programmed on the main-site, but until then...we've got you covered. Read more...
5 Reasons To Own your Own Jump Rope
  1.  Consistency... Tiger woods doesn't go around borrowing drivers from other golfers...Roger Federer doesn't show up to the US Open, and borrow a tennis racquet. When you use the same equipment every time you attempt to jump rope, your body is able to concentrate on being accurate, instead of interpreting variations. Every time you pick up your rope, you'll want it to be the same length, the same speed, the same weight...etc.  Anything else will slow down the learning process. 2.  Excitement... I don't think I've ever heard someone... Read more...
